Apologies for stating the obvious...

I was just pondering newsgroups, message boards, and a whole slew of other communication protocols. Especially newsgroups seem to compare against parts of livejournal...

Is livejournal now almost thought of as a 'new age' communication system? How does it differ from the norm, what does it expressly do better, etc? I can think of a few things...

My urge to discuss this with the greater community has surpassed my common sense to not bring these things up :)
