I'm a bit confused......

When I first started buying a paid account on LJ (many many names ago), one of my main motivations was the fact that I could customize my journal with pretty layouts since I'm into web design.......I was under the impression that customization was limited for free accounts, but I am beginning to wonder if LJ might actually be losing money allowing its free users to customize their journal to an extreme they are allowing. Don't get me wrong, free account customization should still be allowed...but take this community for instance: Free_Elite Until coming across this community, I didn't know that layouts could be customized to an extreme as to look like a paid account...Doesn't this basically get rid of most of the reason behind having a paid account?
