Paid Comics?

I like the streams that bring good newspaper comic strips such as Dilbert and Foxtrot to LJ, but having worked for the past seven years to try to get a comic strip picked up for national syndication, I've learned that what is judged as "appropriate for newspapers" is most often bland and unfunny. Most newspaper readers are older, and editors fear upsetting them by replacing decades-old stale comics with something new. Editors also dread the complaint calls that anything "edgy" generates. Consequently, it's easier for a cartoonist who has been dead for decades to be on our comics pages than anybody trying to break in now.

There are many talented cartoonists who deserve an audience, but will never be in newspapers. Hundreds of wannabe and professional cartoonists alike have put up websites, but almost all are actually losing money and most still aren't finding many readers.

It seems to me that if the best of these comics could be made available here on a fee basis, it could help both LJ and the most deserving of these starving artists. It could also be an inexpensive and fun way for people here who can't afford to pay for LJ to at least contribute something towards it's operation.

I wonder if members would be willing to pay a small amount for daily comics that they can't find, or are hard to find, elsewhere. I've taken the liberty of creating a poll to see what people think of this idea. I'd be interested in any and all discussion. TIA!
